French influencer Nabilla (9M+ Instagram followers) celebrated her birthday in Tokyo. I photographed her in the Mandarin Oriental hotel lounge, using discreet lighting to avoid disturbing other guests. The photos received over 368,000 likes.

An American umbrella company approached me to photograph their high-end umbrella collection across iconic Tokyo locations. I captured their signature model in Shibuya’s neon-lit streets during a light rain, creating atmospheric shots that highlighted the umbrella’s water-resistant properties. Moving to the traditional setting of Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, I photographed the umbrella against Japanese traditional architecture, showcasing its elegant design. The client was particularly impressed with how the photos captured both modern and traditional aspects of Tokyo while maintaining their product’s premium positioning.

A Japanese fashion designer hired me to photograph her latest collection for her online store and social media. We shot photos of three models wearing her designs against a white backdrop in my studio. The final, edited images were delivered two weeks later.

To help a Japanese girl band singer collaborate with clothing brands, we planned and shot a diverse model portfolio. A makeup artist and hairstylist perfected her look during the studio session.

To personalize its online platform, a Japanese language school commissioned me to photograph its teachers. I used the school’s headquarters (library and terrace) as backdrops to create varied and engaging headshots for each teacher.

5 Best Practices to Create Your Model Portfolio in Japan

Tokyo, January 14, 2025 by JG

Are you an aspiring model in Japan looking to create a stunning portfolio? A crucial step is planning your first photoshoot. Here are 5 best practices to help make your photo shoot efficient and your portfolio shine!

1. Pre-Production

Concept and Mood: Define a clear concept and mood for your portfolio (e.g., theme, style, emotion).

Shot List: List desired poses, outfits, and expressions to keep the shoot focused.

Location Scouting: Choose a location that complements your concept and offers variety in natural light and backgrounds.

2. Teamwork

Photographer: Choose a photographer whose style matches your vision. Review their portfolio and discuss your expectations. Sharing inspiration photos beforehand helps the photographer understand your desired look.

Makeup and Hair: Professional makeup and hairstyling can enhance your look if your budget allows.

3. Be Camera-Ready

Skincare: Hydrate and get a good night’s sleep before your photo session.

Practice Poses: Rehearse in front of a mirror to feel confident.

Bring Variety: Pack various outfits, accessories, and shoes for diverse looks.

4. Engage & Enjoy

Communicate openly with your photographer and don’t hesitate to ask for adjustments. Relax, be natural, and enjoy the process for the best results.

5. Post-production

Collaborate with your photographer to select the best photos from your session. Then your photographer will provide professional editing to deliver high-quality portfolio shots.

Create stunning photos that capture your unique personality to impress agencies and clients. Foreign models are in demand in Japan! Your portfolio is an investment in your modeling career, so be patient and persistent.
